Montparnasse cemetery, in the 14th arrondissement, was opened in 1824 and is the second largest in Paris (after the Pere Lachaise). With 35,000 plots, it is the resting place for many significant figures including politicians, philosophers, artists, actors and writers. Some famous residents include Charles Baudelaire, Guy de Maupassant, Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Charlies Garnier. Also located within the cemetery is an old windmill, in the western corner, which dates from the 14th or 15th century, and is one of the last surviving windmills in Paris.
