The 13th arrondissement of Paris (XIIIe arrondissement) is referred to as treizième or Gobelins. The name Gobelins, comes from the Gobelins Manufactory, a renown tapestry factory that used to supply French and European royalty.
The 13th arrondissement is situated on the left bank of the River Seine. It is home to Paris's principal Asian community, the Quartier Asiatique, located in the southeast of the arrondissement in an area that contains many high-rise apartment buildings.
The 13th arrondissement is also home to the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand and the newly built business district of Paris Rive Gauche. It includes the neighbourhood of Butte aux Cailles, and secret villages, such as the Cite Florale, an area known for its green and quaint alleyways.
Along with the Gobelins Manufactory, the 13th arrondissement also has its share of history, with the 17th century Pitie-Salpetriere, which was once the site of a gunpowder factory, but is now the location of one of Europe's largest hospital.
